JOHN BLEY of East Leake & London 1674-1731 distiller & benefactor
This publication tells the story of John Bley , benefactor of East Leake who gave the village a substantial school at a time when most village children would not have received an education.
His relationship with Sir Thomas Parkyns of Bunny is of great local interest, also his financial dealings with the Bank of England, shipping and the distilling trade.
Life in London in the late 17th Century and early 18th Century as lived by a young man from a small Nottinghamshire village.
The number of sources which have been used in the research are numerous.
This is a fascinating book for anyone who is interested in history, local and national.
Dr Michael Honeybone, author and consultant local historian, commented :
“What an extraordinary piece of local history this is. At long last a book which fully captures locality, nation and historical period, and both town and country. John Bley…so effectively brought back to life.”
